Temporomandibular Disorder

My jaw has not been able to close for over a week. The right side very painful. I can't chew.

So I finally went to the doctor yesterday, and was diagnosed with Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder.

Basically the little disc between my jawbone to my skull is inflamed.

I have to take 600 mg of ibuprofen with every meal. (1800 mg a day!) for the next 2 weeks and eat only "soft foods." Then I go back in for a check-up.

Soft foods?! Over Christmas?! This sucks!!!!!

This is going to be hard because "the old fat me" in my head instantly cheers, "Ice cream is soft! Fudge is soft! Mashed potatoes and gravy are soft!! Stuffing is soft!"

I am a worried about suddenlying binging because something is "soft."

I am keeping my food journal, but I feel like I have walked into a landmine!

Can you think of any healthy, filling soft foods?

The only soft filling thing I can think of is shakes--a scoop or two of protein powder, a cup of fruit, 1/4 cup OJ or some juice and blend it all up. Doesn't exactly scream 'holiday' but will keep you full and you can sample from the actual holiday fare. Also if available and if you're willing, an acupuncturist might be able to help. Merry Christmas!

Hmm... water? Peas? Peas have to be good, right? Steamed baby carrots? Good luck!

Here's a few that come to mind - soups;oatmeal; cream of wheat; yogurt; jello and pudding; cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, steamed spinach; vegetable juices; mashed sweet potatoes; couscous; soft cheeses like Laughing Cow. But, you're right over the holidays can be a challenge. Good luck and watch that ibuprofen next it will be Prilosec to heal the hole that could burn into your stomach.

A lot of grains or pastas are soft. You could pair it with soft, finely chopped or ground vegetables like tomatoes.

My favorite thing right now is couscous w/ spinach and feta. That is really soft, really yummy and healthy.

Salsa is soft. Egg beaters, a little cheese, some salsa is a great breakfast.

Oatmeal or other hot breakfast cereals are soft.

I'll stop before I start sounding like Karl in Sling Blade. Hmmm. Soft...

also I forgot to add you need about a cup of water in those shakes, too!

I'm on the new plan at Weight Watchers and they are really pushing the filling foods which I think is great. They are higher in proteins and fibers and really do fill you up. For breakfast today I ate an egg omelet made from 1 whole egg, and 2 egg whites, with some garlic and mushrooms with a little bit of shredded cheddar cheese. Cottage cheese and canned peaches is good. For lunch a black bean burger with soup. Maybe a turkey chili for dinner? Hope this helps : ) It may sound challenging but I don't think impossible ;-)

Hi! I lurk here but thought that since I have TMJ I should post! I've been treating it (very successfully) with massage. You need to find a good therapist that will do massage inside the mouth. Its a great relief and it has really helped with my TMJ.

Good luck with your soft foods!! :)

When my sister had her mouth wired shut (I know yours isn't the same thing) her staple was blended graham crackers and milk.
Other soft foods would be canned peaches, canned tangerines, Campbell's vegetarian vegetable soup, cup of soup, One of my favorite morning drinks are 2 cups of orange juice, 1 bananna, and about 6 frozen stawberries blended in a blender. Also this way I get 4 fruits in too. Sorry I seem to be giving you liquid items but then you wouldn't have to chew at all. The amish here eat saltines in milk also.
Did you ever see the ingredients for Oprah's Green Drink she drinks every day? Here is the link, http://www.oprah.com/recipe/food/recipesdrinks/20081030_tows_greendrink
Just noticed this is probably late but I'll post it anyway for the recipes I've included.
