Referred to a Fetal Specialist

Last Monday I got a call saying my blood test came back with a 1 in 266 chance of Spina Bifida and a 1 in133 for other open neural tube defects.

I was very upset by the news and had to take the day off of work because I became a crying mess.  I think I would have been okay if the doctor didn't say: "We can do additional testings and see if you want to continue the pregnancy."

Continue my pregnancy...   wait,  WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Did he just tell me, "Your blood test was a little off, so you may want to kill your baby."

ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I WAS SO MAD!!!

He also said I needed to schedule amniocentesis or a diagnositic ultrasound so we can learn for sure if our child does have a birth defect.

Knowing the risks posed by amniocentesis I asked for the Ultrasound... but when we went in the baby was not cooperating, so they could not see if the markers for Spina Bifida were there.

I was then referred to "Maternal-Fetal Specialists" who specialize in high-risk pregnancy and birth defects.

There is a 99% chance that my test was a false positive and the baby is healthy.

All testing to this point has also said the baby is fine and developing right on target.

So we went to the specialists to have a super high-res diagnostic ultrasound -- and again they could not see what they needed too!!!!  But what they could see looks NORMAL.

So we will go back on the 15th of July, when the baby will be bigger and hopefully in the right position for them to look.

Baby and I do not need this stress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went through this TWICE and my babies are FINE! They make WAY more money when you have the Amnio, and they are all freaked about lawsuits.
so they really pressure you. I m with you, the baby is fine, LAY OFF DOCS!

This is terrible how "sensitive" some doctors are...

they did that to my friend too, and her baby was fine...

I have 2 kids myself, but I hated this prenatal diagnostic...

Kids are a gift from god... and no matter what... who can judge what is worth living...

makes me so mad, that you had so much stress...

warmest regards from Germany

Every person I've ever known who had one of those tests come back with iffy results had a perfectly healthy baby. I wouldn't pay any attention to it at all. In fact, I'm going to refuse those tests with my next pregnancy. Who needs the stress? And it's not like I'm going to terminate the pregnancy anyway, so what difference does it make?

<3 Hope all goes well,

I had a baby 19 months ago and the Dr. said my baby was going to be 13lbs and tried to push me into a c-section to which I said no to...But when I was in L/D he told me the woman in the other rooms baby had just died and he had a gut feeling mine would too if I didn't do the c-section... I was scared to death so of course I said yes. My son was born only 7lbs and very healthy... my records say I elected to have a c-section... no mention of why the Dr said he had a bad gut feeling (he had said something about my babies heart but that’s not recorded in the record AT ALL ) I was due around thanksgiving and I so think he just wanted to get to that turkey, he was long gone before I even made it out of recovery!!!!

I don't know what's wrong with obgyn's but at some point they forget what a mother and baby are and just start seeing numbers, risk, and burdens on their schedules .

It leaves us mothers having to not only make hard choices about our little babies but also having to do a lot of our own research and trying to understand the information to make the best choices for or kids.

I hope all your test come back good. Keep that 99% false positive at the top of your mind as you face this.

Really your sane, it makes a whole lot more sense to not risk aborting a 99% chance to be healthy baby then jumping the gun because of 1%!!

The Dr. should have never talked about ending your pregnancy without further testing!! He should just explained they needed more test and then cross the roads as needed when those results came back.

I’m sure your baby is fine and your Dr. is just a jerk ( I think most are).

I hope this helps!! I know it’s not the same exact situation.

I don’t think I will ever make peace with my c-section . I still wish I could give my Dr a c-section… but that’s a whole other issue. ^_^;;

<3 Lulu

(You've helped me lose 41 lbs of baby weight without once making me feel like crap about myself!!) Thanks.

Nice too meet you!

The most important things to teenage weight loss are a proper balanced diet and doing exercise regularly. If they are not interested in exercising they can take part in sports and other activities.

We went through a similar situation with our daughter. Keep your head up and everything will be ok.

Wow! What a crazy trip to the DR! It's insane he'd say "We can do additional testings and see if you want to continue the pregnancy", when there's a 99% chance it's wrong!

Good luck to you and your baby!

Sending my thoughts and prayers your way. They told me that my son had a chance of having heart issues and Down syndrome, but my husband and I decided not to get an amniocentesis. Our son was born healthy. Sounds encouraging that the high-res ultrasound looked normal!

I tested a 1 in 250 chance of my baby having down syndrome or Edwards syndrome, which i didnt think was a pretty good result but of course I continued with my pregnancy, baby was fine.

second pregnancy my test result was 1 in 29000 chance of baby being born with defect...

both babies were fine, I know so many people who chose NOT to have these tests because unless they were certain the baby was going to be born into a world of pain and then die not long after what would the outcome change? you are still going to have your baby and love it just the same.

I am praying for you and your child also. I think sometimes people forget to be compassionate to each other. Don't let what he said take away for the joy and anticipation of new life.
